It’s hard to know exactly what you should expect from therapy. This answer will vary from office to office— so I will speak for my own, because I know it best!

Before you begin therapy, it is so important to understand what the research says about what makes therapy effective. Research shows us that the style of therapy that is used is important, as is the orientation of the therapist (for example, directive vs. client-centered). However, the most important factor is the “therapeutic alliance” which refers to the goodness of fit between a client and therapist and the level of relationship that is built in the room.

Because of this, I want to introduce myself to you so that you have an understanding of what makes therapy with me transformative for many of my clients where we have found that we are the right fit for each other.

I am a marriage and family therapist, a wife, mother, business-owner, believer in Christ… but at the end of the day, I’m human just like anyone else! I have my own set of beliefs and preferences in life but I am a believer in justice, fairness and the importance of a nonjudgmental stance in therapy and in life. My clients and I discuss anything from books to children to deeply rooted traumatic experiences to sex and relationships. There is no topic that I would not welcome if it is important to you.

I see the change process as one that happens over time due to self-awareness and continually having your growth and small steps toward success reflected back to you. We are usually our own worst critics and don’t give ourselves enough credit for how we are making it from one day to the next. I view my job as being the one to point out your victories, provide practical tools and to help explore, understand and reframe root issues that may be contributing to maladaptive thoughts or behaviors.

I have friends and family, as well as clients and colleagues and through my experiences with them all, so many interesting insights and questions have been brought up and shared.

One thing I know is that you too have had discussions and experiences which have led you to some places of confusion or unrest. On my blog, I want to talk about mental health, adulting, self-worth, becoming a boss in your own right, and all things in between. I am also on my own journey of self-discovery and growth and want to share some of my experiences: In a selfish way, writing for you can be therapeutic for me.

I look forward to engaging with YOU.
